Shelton is located in the southern portion of the county along Puget Sound's Oakland Bay. Shelton is easily reached by Highway 101 and State Route 3.

David Shelton founded Shelton, originally named Sheltonville, in 1855. The plat was not recorded until 1884. Shelton is Mason County's only incorporated city, serves as the county seat, and is home to all local, county and state government offices.

The Olde Town Shelton Association, a Main Street Program, is actively stimulating downtown economic development and promoting it as an exciting place to live, work, and invest.

Shelton offers residents strip malls for shopping, views of fir-lined hills from the valley floor, and spectacular views of the Olympic Mountains. The city has five creeks that run through it that are easily discovered and enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The city has many parks like Kneeland Park that offer state of the art structures for play and family enjoyment. The city also boasts golf courses, baseball and soccer fields.

Restaurants are no stranger to Shelton. Many restaurants offer quaint, intimate award winning meals. Dining is definitely a pleasant experience in Shelton.
