Port Townsend's
population is approximately 8000, with all the amenities of most cities this size. Citizen participation in local government is high, and an active club, organization or agency can be found for almost any interest or concern. Jefferson County Hospital and a 99% volunteer fire department provide health, safety and fire assistance. City Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff provide law enforcement. All manner of educational opportunities are available, less a four-year college. Besides an active historical theme, Port Townsend also combines the best of developing and established artists of all disciplines in presenting workshops, live events and festivals year-round. From film festivals at the Rose Theatre to music festivals at Centrum, there's creative energy all over! The Wooden Boat Foundation's Wooden Boat Festival in September and an active maritime trade draw many to the area, whether to see the beauty of a well cared for wooden boat or to have a ship hauled out at the Port of Port Townsend for maintenance. Many marinas provide harbor for those coming by water. Port Townsend Paper still remains the largest employer in the area, though many small businesses thrive here. 2 1/2 hours from Seattle by auto and ferry, the city does allow a reasonable trip to the "big city" if needed. |
